The South West Coast Path

"Great to be here again - already planning my next trip!"

(OS Explorer Map Number 139).

Baggy Lodge is situated on the South West Coast Path which is just as good for short walks and gentle strolls as it is for long-distance walking. There are suitable walks for everyone right on our doorstep!

To Baggy Point…
If you turn right out of Baggy Lodge and follow the coast path westwards you will reach Baggy Point within 15 minutes (at a steady pace). The first section, out to the tip of Baggy Point is suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs (and can be followed in reverse for the return journey). Once through the gate and past the memorial to Henry Williamson, the author of "Tarka the Otter", follow the lower path to the left. There are spectacular views over towards Lundy Island and Hartland Point and the steep slopes are smothered in wild flowers, gorse and heather in late spring and summer.

On your way up to the point you should come across our Hebridean sheep during the months of October to March. At the end of the headland you may also see breeding seabirds, including both cormorants and shags. The cliffs here are also very popular with climbers and have been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for their geological interest. Features including wave cut platforms and raised beaches can be seen.

From the viewpoint the path rises steeply for a short way before following a drystone wall covered with lichens back towards the car park. As you look over the fields of Croyde Hoe Farm you can see WWII dummy pillboxes which were used by the American troops training for D-day.

This walk is no more than 2 miles and can easily be achieved in 30 minutes (at a steady pace) but is definitely experienced best at a more leisurely pace! Make sure you take a camera with you!

You can stock up on drinks before you head off, plan your trips or just relax and enjoy a break from your walking with a tasty Cream Tea at our Surf Cafe. We have excellent accommodation options throughout the year from Bunk rooms for larger walking groups or more luxurious double rooms too.

"Thanks, as ever, for a chilled, smiley few days! See you soon."
